Gem Aquarium CADS 600 Detritus Removal System Automatic Self Spooling Roll Mechanical Filter

Aquariums need two kinds of filtration - solid waste removal and removal of dissolved pollutants. Dissolved pollutants, result from decomposition of solid waste in the system.

Some aquarist would think that, once solid waste is out of sight (and inside a conventional filter) it is no longer a problem. However, solid waste trapped in the filter-media, will ultimately be broken down by microorganisms  into a wide range of dissolved pollutants. Especially in reef aquariums accumulated waste can create excessive nitrate and phosphate buildup. And with rapid throughput of most filters, dissolved pollutants produced in the filter-media are quickly pumped back into the system.

GADS -Gem Aquarium Detritus Removal System - not only traps the solid wastes in the Aquarium but also Removes them away from the water flow. Wastes like free floating algae, food and other small particles, are removed continuously and automatically; preventing most of the sources of pollution. This is unlike conventional filters, which trap waste with some form of filter-media, then such trapped waste are decomposed by microorganisms and returned as dissolved waste back into the system.

Working Principle:
All of the Aquarium water, is routed to the CADS filter first, where the water must pass through a fine mesh filter cloth, until the cloth slightly clogs and starts to raise the water height in the filter chamber. A sensor will detect this rise of water and the filter cloth spool will rotate and advance.

The system is so sensitive, that the filter will be activated almost immediately after feeding or with any disturbance to the gravel or during algae cleaning. On reef aquariums with this system, bio-filter media like the biholix or bio-balls are not necessary, but there is no harm using them, either. The GADS is a perfect matched system for the DialySeas.
